There’s a green empire just 90 minutes drive down the peninsula from San Francisco, in the Santa Cruz mountains. Big Basin is a retreat into the archaic woods.

Wax inquisitors sit at a covered table with claw feet. A wood cross like a gnarled tree rests on the table. Here is the place where people kneeled. Further into the building, they were interrogated by men licensed as holy.

Blown-out ghost mansions adjacent to new concrete-block apartments. Restaurants and bars, clubs and tiendas. It’s not commercial like Miraflores, at the same time, it’s not simply residential. At night there’s a nervous edge, during the day the streets busy with carbon.
